Biohazard Cleanup Questions, Answered
These are the questions people in Houston ask Houston Biohazard Pros most often, answered the way the technician would answer them at the door. They cover timing, discretion, insurance and victim compensation, and what has to come out. If yours is not here, call and ask it.

Every question in one place
How soon can you come?
The same day, once the police, the medical examiner or the coroner have released the scene. If you are not sure whether it has been released, call anyway; the dispatcher can tell you who to ask.
Will the neighbors know?
Not from us. Vehicles are unmarked on request, technicians change into protective equipment inside the property, and nothing about the job is discussed with anyone but the person who booked it.
Who pays for this?
Many homeowners and landlord insurance policies cover biohazard cleanup, and most states run a crime victim compensation program that can help with cleanup after a violent crime. We give you the documentation for either. Where neither applies, the written quote is the price.
Can we clean it ourselves?
Please do not. Beyond the risk of infection and the emotional cost, household cleaning leaves material in pad, subfloor and wall cavities that keeps causing odor and bacteria. The contaminated waste also cannot go in household trash.
What has to be thrown away?
Anything porous the material soaked into: carpet, pad, mattresses, upholstered furniture, drywall sections, sometimes subfloor. Hard surfaces and structural framing are cleaned and disinfected in place. Personal items that can be saved are set aside for the family.
How long does it take?
A contained area in one room is often finished in a day. A hoarding cleanup or a property where contamination spread through several rooms can take several days. The scope tells you before the work starts.
Who releases the scene?
The police and the medical examiner or coroner. Once the body has been taken and they have finished, the property is released to the owner or next of kin, and the cleanup can begin. The dispatcher can tell you who to ask if you are unsure.
Does the smell go away completely?
Yes, when every source is removed and the air is treated. Odor that remains after cleaning means material was missed, usually under flooring or in a wall cavity, and we come back to find it.
Can the family stay in the rest of the house?
Usually yes. The affected area is sealed and under negative air, and the equipment is quiet enough. Some families prefer to be away for the day, and either is fine.
Will you find personal items?
Tell the crew what to look for and they search before anything is removed. Items that can be cleaned are cleaned and returned; items that cannot are described to you before disposal.
When can cleanup start?
As soon as the investigating agency releases the scene, which they confirm to the property owner or the family. Call before that if you want, and the crew is scheduled for the moment of release.
Does the victim compensation program pay you directly?
It depends on the state and the program. Some pay the provider directly, some reimburse the applicant. We provide the itemized invoice and photos the application needs either way.
What about tear gas?
Tear gas residue settles on every surface and in the ducts and keeps causing burning eyes and skin until it is neutralized. It is a specific cleaning process, and it is included in the scope whenever police used it.
Can you secure the property?
Yes. Doors and windows broken in the incident or during entry are boarded on the first visit so the property is not left open.
Can I clean a small amount of blood myself?
A few drops on a hard surface, with gloves, a disposable cloth and a disinfectant, yes. Anything that reached carpet, fabric or a mattress, or any amount from someone whose health status is unknown, is a job for a crew with the right equipment and disposal.
Do you clean vehicles?
Yes. Cars, trucks and work vehicles are cleaned in your driveway, at your lot or at a body shop. Soaked seat foam and carpet are removed, hard surfaces disinfected and the cabin deodorized.
Does insurance cover it?
Homeowners, landlord, auto and commercial policies often do, depending on the cause. We provide photos and an itemized invoice; the coverage decision is the insurer's.
How fast can you come?
The same day, usually within hours. Say on the phone whether the area is occupied and whether emergency services have finished.
My relative does not want anyone in the house. Can you still help?
We can talk with you about how other families have handled it, and we can do the walkthrough with you and the relative together when they are ready. The cleanup itself needs the consent of the person with authority over the property.
What happens to the belongings?
Whatever the resident or family decides to keep is kept and cleaned. Usable items go to donation where the family agrees, recyclables are recycled, and the rest is disposed of. Valuables and documents found during sorting are handed over.
Do you handle rodents and insects?
The waste and nesting material are removed as biohazard, and the property is cleaned and disinfected. Live pest control is a licensed pest company's job, and we tell you when one is needed.
Is it safe to stay in the house?
Usually yes, as long as the affected area is sealed and you stay out of it. If the backup reached most of the living space or the air system, the technician tells you on the first visit.
Can the carpet be cleaned instead of removed?
No. Carpet and pad that contacted sewage are removed and disposed of. Cleaning cannot reach what soaked into the pad and the subfloor.
Who fixes the sewer line?
A licensed plumber clears or repairs the line. We handle everything the sewage touched inside. Call us as soon as the flow has stopped, or before if it has stopped on its own.
Will the smell go away?
Yes, once the contaminated material is out and the surfaces are disinfected and dried. Lingering odor after that means something wet was missed, and we come back to find it.
How long until the space can be used?
Once the product's contact time has passed and the surfaces are dry, usually within an hour or two of the crew finishing. There is no lingering fog and no need to air the space out for days.
Are the products safe around children and pets?
The products are EPA-registered hospital-grade disinfectants and are safe once dry and past their contact time. People and pets stay out during application and until surfaces are dry.
Do you provide a certificate?
You get a report listing the areas treated, the products with their EPA registration numbers, and the ATP readings. Businesses use it for staff, customers and inspectors.
Can you disinfect a vehicle?
Yes. Rideshare cars, ambulances, work trucks, buses and private vehicles are treated inside with the same products and verified the same way.
Is it really dangerous to sweep up droppings?
Dry rodent droppings and nesting material can carry hantavirus, which spreads in the dust that sweeping and vacuuming raise. Public health guidance is to wet the material with disinfectant before removing it and to wear a respirator, which is what the crew does.
Do you remove the animals?
Live rodents and wildlife are a licensed pest control company's job, and we clean up after they have finished and sealed the entries. Dead animals in walls, attics and crawl spaces we locate and remove.
Can the attic insulation be saved?
Insulation with rodent runs, droppings and urine through it is removed and replaced. Insulation in untouched areas stays. The crew shows you the line.
Will the cat urine smell come out of the concrete?
With enzyme treatment and, where needed, sealing of the slab, yes. Surface cleaning alone does not reach it, which is why it keeps coming back on humid days.
Is the assessment confidential?
Yes. The visit is booked with one person, the vehicle is unmarked on request, and the quote goes only to that person.
Do you work with insurance and victim compensation?
We document every job with photos and an itemized scope, which is what both insurers and state victim compensation programs ask for. The decision is theirs.
Do you do commercial properties?
Yes: rental units, hotels, offices, retail and vehicles. Tell us on the phone what happened and where.
When will someone call me back?
During the day, usually within the hour. Overnight requests are returned first thing in the morning. If a scene has just been released, call the number instead of waiting.
Who sees what I write here?
The dispatcher who calls you back, and nobody else. Nothing is shared outside the company, and the callback comes from an ordinary phone number.
Not sure this is a job for us?
Describe it on the phone. If it is a job for a plumber or a regular cleaner instead, we say so.
